Happy Monday, everyone! It’s time for another writing exercise. You know the drill: 200 words or less in the form of a song, story or poem. We hope you’ll share your writing with us by posting it in the comments, or give us a link to your website if you’ve posted your writing there. Happy writing!

Memories are powerful things
I see the flames and my heart sings
Remembering a childhood of camping and fun
Roasting marshmellows over a fire, as this one.
Late night sounds, crickets and creeks
Chirping or flowing by as I sleep.
The feel of pebbles beneath my bed
The fear of crawlies on my head
The smell of the earth, clean and new
As each morning I wake and step in the dew.
I love the mountains
The rolling hills
Being in nature gives me such thrills
I’ve buried a frog, squeezed to death with love
And made a paper sack marker to put above
I’ve hiked long trails
Up hills and down
I’ve wondered when we’d ever get back to town.
I’ve chased fireflies and kept them in jars
It was nice not to need to get around with cars.
Bikes and shoes were all that you used
By the end of the summer, my feet were abused
But the time spent with family was priceless indeed
And these memories evoked by the fire, I need.
Now I am grown, some family is gone,
My days of camping are far from done.
One of these days we’ll pack up and go
And to my children these pasttimes I’ll show.
May they find such fun and pleasure as I
And look fondly upon it, to sleep under the sky.
Leigh, your poem is fantastic! It brings me back to a much simpler time when the world was mine. Days and nights were spent entirely outdoors. Thank you for prompting those great memories!
Pamela, I’m happy to oblige!
