When Christmas Comes by Debbie Macomber
Back Cover: What would Christmas be without a new romantic comedy from Debbie Macomber? Let Debbie bring you the laughter and joy of the season!
From the inside front cover: Trading houses. Trading towns. Trading Christmas. Emily Springer, widowed mother of one decides to leave her hometown of Leavenworth, Washington, to spend Christmas with her daughter in Boston.
Charles Brewster, history professor, seasoned curmudgeon and resident of Boston, wants to avoid Christmas altogether.
Through an Internet site, they arrange to swap houses for the holiday. So Emily goes to Boston–and discovers that her daughter has gone to Florida. And Charles arrives in Leavenworth to discover a town that looks like Santa’s village, full of Christmas trees, Christmas music and elves.
Meanwhile, Emily’s friend Faith Kerrigan travels to Leavenworth to visit her–and finds Charles the grouch…whose brother, Ray, shows up at Charles’s place, to find Emily living there.
Through all the mix-ups and misunderstandings, amid the chaos and confusion, romance begins to emerge in unexpected ways. Because when Christmas comes, so does love.
As I read this delightful story, I realized I’ve seen a movie which follows this book a bit. I’m sure they got the movie idea from this particular book. The swapping of houses in different places and someone showing up there who shouldn’t have. Of course, in the movie it was Jude Law (YUMMY!) who showed up to meet Cameron Diaz (lucky lady!). The other lady got Jack Black…I wouldn’t trade her…but that’s just my own opinion! Anyway, reading this story was wonderful. It starts out with Emily Springer calling her daughter, who is attending college in Boston. Her daughter let’s her know she has to study and work and cannot come home this year for Christmas. Emily is devastated. Since her husband’s death, her daughter has become her world. The only important things in her life are her daughter and her job. She has no social life to speak of. She has a best friend named Faith Kerrigan who she can talk to about anything. Faith has been divorced for years and still hasn’t met anyone special. She too doesn’t have a social life. Emily decides to surprise her daughter by showing up to spend Christmas with her. Emily’s daughter Heather made plans to go to Florida with her biker boyfriend and his buddies. When Emily arrives in Boston and Heather has to tell her, Emily is once again devastated. Faith, who doesn’t know Emily went to Boston, feels bad for Emily and doesn’t want her to spend Christmas alone, so Faith decides to go to Emily’s to surprise her by celebrating Christmas with her–she brings Santa and his elves and the “Christmas Hater” answers the door! It is such a mix-up…everyone is at the wrong place at the wrong time…the best intentions all went awry. There is so much more to this story–brothers who the ladies meet, one is wonderful, the other a stick-in-the-mud. While the events unfold, the story keeps your interest and will make you smile! You’ll totally enjoy it!
Because this is such a “feel good” story –I give this book 3 cocktails! It was fun and delightful read.
