My Hero by Mary McBride
Warner Books - Contemporary Romance
From the front cover: He took a bullet for the president. Will he take an arrow through the heart?
From the back cover: Home is where the hero is…
Secret Service agent Cal Griffin took a bullet for the president and became an instant media magnet–and the man who can jump-start Holly Hick’s TV career. The catch? Holly has to return to a sleepy town in Texas, a world she thought she’d left forever. For Cal, forced out of commission, recuperating in home sweet Honeycomb is just what he needs. No moony-eyed women! No reporters! Then skeptical Holly–who doesn’t believe in heroes–arrives and they’re both in big trouble. Maybe it’s the way she attracts danger. Maybe it’s the way he turns up the heat under her professional cool. Or maybe it’s the way Cupid can’t resist bringing together two people who rub each other the wrong way–just to watch them get it right!
This story starts out telling you about our heroine Hollis Mae (Holly) Hicks. Holly grew up in Texas with parents who didn’t show her love or affection and made life miserable for anyone around them. Her dad was called a hero…while rescuing a friend in the middle of a conflict, he stepped on a land mine and lost his right foot. He survived, but he let his self pity destroy the rest of his life. Holly’s parents never cared about her dreams. She leaves Texas the first chance she gets and works her way across the country…determined never to return to Texas–she hates Texas. Holly’s dream is to be producer. Her whole life she had the same dream and now she is finally offered a chance. Her boss gives her an assignment…she gets to produce a Hero Week segment and the name of the hero she has to interview is Cal Griffin. Cal worked in the secret service and was a human shield for the President of the United States. In the line of duty, Cal was shot while protecting the President. He went back home to family to recuperate and get back in shape to return to his former job. The sleepy town of Homeycomb, Texas was home to Cal. He’s not happy about having to do a story for Hero Week, he’d rather not be in the segment, but the White House wanted it…so he agreed. Holly doesn’t believe in heroes and she actually tells Cal that once they meet. He laughs and tells her that he doesn’t believe in heroes either. Once Holly starts interviewing Cal and gets to know him and the people in the town, she realizes that Texas isn’t so bad after all. The more time she spends with Cal, the more her feelings for him grow. The story really starts once they meet and go through their journey together. You’ll have to read the book for the details and the wonderful writing and characters. You’ll laugh, cry and fall in love with Cal yourself!
Because I believe every woman wants a hero in her life…I give this great story 3 cocktails!
