Welcome to Poetry Play Thursday!

It’s time to get back to some poetry fun! Today’s prompt harkens back to an earlier PPT about found poetry. Your mission is to pull your material from one of the many social networking sites available to us: Facebook, Twitter, Identi.ca, Plurk, Ning, Jaiku, SocialGo, you name it. Find a note, tweet or post that intrigues you, play with the words and create a poem!

I used some of Warren Ellis’ tweets for the following examples:

Feral interns abandoned
fashioning a spear from
roaming WB producers

Hey everybody! It’s Tuesday again, time for another picture prompt. I’ve been without power for a little while, and cable and internet even longer, due to some vicious storms we had here in Southern Ohio. Thank goodness the power is now back on, and my internet is back up and running! I did get more writing in without all the distractions online, but I sure did miss it!

Okay, here’s today’s picture. Have fun, write lots, and leave your story or poem in comments or a link so I can come find you:)

Welcome to Poetry Play Thursday!

Have you been over to www(dot)wordle(dot)net? For some reason, I find much enjoyment creating wordles and changing their configuration. What do you do with them once they’re created? I guess whatever you like. Today, I’m going to use one of the wordles I created as a prompt for you to use for writing a poem. You may use some or all of the words to create a poem of any length. Bonus points to anyone who can use them all! I hope you’ll share what you’ve written by posting your poem, or a link to it, in our comments! Have fun!

Welcome to Poetry Play Thursday!

Many of us have a birthday coming up and I thought we could find another way of celebrating it. Hot dogs and fireworks are tons of fun but I thought we could look a little deeper into the USA’s Independence Day holiday. Today’s prompt is:

INDEPENDENCE

For today’s poem, try writing about independence in any of its many forms: national independence, personal independence (from parents, a lover), the City of Independence… It’s up to you.

OF HISTORY AND HOPE

We have memorized America,
how it was born and who we have been and where.
In ceremonies and silence we say the words,
telling the stories, singing the old songs.
We like the places they take us. Mostly we do.
The great and all the anonymous dead are there.
We know the sound of all the sounds we brought.
The rich taste of it is on our tongues.
But where are we going to be, and why, and who?
The disenfranchised dead want to know.
We mean to be the people we meant to be,
to keep on going where we meant to go.

But how do we fashion the future? Who can say how
except in the minds of those who will call it Now?
The children. The children. And how does our garden grow?
With waving hands—oh, rarely in a row—
and flowering faces. And brambles, that we can no longer allow.

Who were many people coming together
cannot become one people falling apart.
Who dreamed for every child an even chance
cannot let luck alone turn doorknobs or not.
Whose law was never so much of the hand as the head
cannot let chaos make its way to the heart.
Who have seen learning struggle from teacher to child
cannot let ignorance spread itself like rot.
We know what we have done and what we have said,
and how we have grown, degree by slow degree,
believing ourselves toward all we have tried to become—
just and compassionate, equal, able, and free.

All this in the hands of children, eyes already set
on a land we never can visit—it isn’t there yet—
but looking through their eyes, we can see
what our long gift to them may come to be.
If we can truly remember, they will not forget.

TT: Writing Exercise

I wanted to do something a little different today, so for today’s exercise, I’d like you to do any or all of the following:

Write a story or poem using the following words. It can be any length you like:

Broom
Sky
Stone
Star
Innocent
Trade
Dream

The second thing I’d like you to do is take a memory from the past and change it. Embellish it, turn it into a new memory. Maybe change the events so that, if it’s a bad memory, it becomes a good one.

And last in our TT writing exercise, I’d like you to remember a path you chose at some point in your life, and instead of going down that path, take a different path. What would be different in your life right now if you’d chosen a different path?

For instance, what if you’d chosen a different career? What if you’d married your childhood sweetheart? What if you’d moved away, or if you did move away, what if you’d stayed in your home town? Or it can be as simple as, what if you’d taken the day off work? What if you’d taken a road trip last weekend instead of hanging out at home? What might have happened? Tell us a story!

Feel free to do any or all of the above exercises. And have fun!
